Explore Our Stories
People need story. It is the way we make meaning of history, culture, and our individual lives. At the Jewish Museum of Maryland, we lean into the need for story. We work hard to capture, preserve, interpret, and convey the meaning embedded in the stories of Maryland’s Jewish communities. Explore these pages to discover not only the stories we tell, but how and where we find, keep, and protect them.
As any fan of Toy Story can tell you, inanimate objects are powerful storytellers. No, our collections don’t actually move or talk or feel, but they can remember—if you know how to read and listen to them. Well-loved, well worn, and carefully cared for things all contain the tales of the people who loved, used, and cared for them. Objects are primary sources. They bring us closer to those who came before and serve as a bridge into the past.
In this section, you will find stories about unique items in our collections, information about using our collections for research, our online collections database, and much more.
Place matters because, like objects, places are exceedingly good at holding and sharing meaning. Our two synagogue buildings, the 1845 Lloyd Street Synagogue and the 1876 Chizuk Amuno (now B’nai Israel) Synagogue, have been the site of countless stories of joy and loss, learning and loving, conflict and forgiveness. If objects tell stories, then exhibits are anthologies. We curate exhibits as gifts to our visitors: anthologies of stories selected to speak to each other and you. When we do our job well, we don’t just connect people to history, we connect people to people through history. Exhibits are our medium.
